Boosting nonverbal physician-patient communication in medical education

Abstract: Introduction: Nonverbal communication is an important part of the medical interview. However, nonverbal skills are still underestimated in education and instruments for their teaching assessing schools scarce. Objective: We aimed to translate culturally adapt Relational Communication Scale Observational measurement doctor-patient interactions (RCS-O) Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: translated RCS-O seven stages: initial translation, reconciliation, back review by author, independent review, consensus version through Delphi technique, a language coordinator, pre-test. used video recordings four consultations performed students residents pre-test instrument. During this phase, three observers assessed residents’ performance real health care scenarios use recordings. Results: Most difficulties regarding translation cultural adaptation were related polysemic meaning some items. Words expressions such as “stimulating”, “warmth”, “desire”, “relaxed”, “conversation deeper level”, “deeper relationship”, “casual”, “intensely” required order remove potential sexual connotation that could arise from overintimacy physician-patient relationship. Conclusion: The culturally, conceptually, semantically operationally valid It may represent advance strengthening learning education. hope study encourage educators invest assessment other countries.
